WHETHER YOU’VE BEEN WITH ME SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING DAYS OR THIS IS YOUR FIRST MOMENT IN MY CREATIVE WORLD, I’M GRATEFUL FOR YOUR TIME, PRESENCE AND ATTENTION. :)

AS WE ENTER THIS NEW POST-TRUTH WORLD, ONE SMALL ACT I CAN OFFER IS THE TRUTH OF MY EXPERIENCE, THROUGH MY WRITING. AND IN IT, A SOFT PLACE TO LAND, A PLACE TO CONTEMPLATE THE COMPLEXITY, AND TO FEEL.

All contributions will primarily go toward supporting working artists and independently run businesses (musicians, engineers, recording studios) with living wages in my communities in California and Oregon.

PART 1 - THE SONGS

This collection of songs is a little rough around the edges, takes a few more risks, yet still very much a folk record. ‘elliptic’ was a word I heard used in Adrianne Lenker's (Big Thief) songwriting workshop (or perhaps she said elliptical?) as a way that a song could be - cyclical, meditative, evem opaque in meaning and seemed to encompass a lot the feelings I had been writing through.

They are mostly in modal, open tunings and explore nuance, uncertainty, repetition, choice and change in my personal life, as well as my own mental health, family lineage and a deep yet tenuous connection to earth and nature. Climate grief has been deep on my mind and I find endless meaning through the mythology and folklore of flowers, plants, landscape.

PART 2 - THE HISTORY

I turned 40 this year —

which means I’ve been doing "this" for twenty years.

I suppose you could call it an anniversary of sorts, when I first found the courage to begin performing my own songs. Playing songs at a house show in Santa Cruz, CA in 2004 (and later that year again, when I moved to the east coast) was amazing, and terrifying - but I began to find new life through it.

Fast forward twenty years and I still have so many projects, songs and life brewing inside me. My work has evolved quite a lot since those first moments and I am looking for new ways to give voice to my creative visions. If you’ve been following my journey, you know that I have already made four community-funded (at least in part) albums, and that support has been crucial in continuing to make music.

In recent years I’ve learned that I need to find better ways of living in harmony with my natural rhythms, my sensitivity, my creative drive, the limitations of being in a physical body and my financial capacity. Behind the scenes of art (performing, touring, writing, recording), I also work as a music educator, teaching artist and Creativity Coach / Artist Mentor.

PART 3 - THE FUNDRAISER

While I have been grateful to have run successful crowdfunding campaigns and a number of local arts grant over the years, I've also continued to take on personal debt to fund albums, tours and promotion. One important facet of pursuing music in a healthy way to me means creating more sustainability.

I believe that artists deserve to live healthy lives ~ physically, financially, spiritually, emotionally with ample time to create. So I have created my own version of a fundraiser, in hopes this will create greater ease and creative output in my life.

PART 4 - THE ALBUM

We’ll be splitting time between Altamira Sound in Los Angeles, CA, Page Street Sound in Portland, Oregon with additional overdubs and mixing happening in Portland and New York. I have an amazing group of people working with me and am confident we will create something unique and beautiful together. I am bringing these songs into a mostly live / collaborative process and I’m excited to explore that.
